South Pacific Sadness: Episode 21 (The Overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy & Warren Delano, FDR's Opium Smuggling Grandpa)

Just in time for summer, this episode we taste-test two very different versions of the Mai Tai, taking a trip back in time when a very problematic Tiki culture reigned supreme. We sample the original 1944 version and the 1953 reboot. The OG rum cocktail was once so popular it depleted world rum supplies for a bit.

TUX talks about the very scandalous way the Hawaiian monarchy was overthrown. Not many people know that long before Hawaii was a state it was a sovereign nation with a queen, a democratically elected legislature and ambassadors all over the world. This was true until a powerful group of white Hawaiian businessmen set their sights on the island nation.

Minisode 14: What Fostered Our Interest in History & Politics

This minisode we discuss what sparked our interests in American history and politics. TUX reflects on his political awakening during the runup to the 2008 election, and how his interest in history started in college.

This minisode we discuss what sparked our interests in American history and politics.

TUX reflects on his political awakening during the runup to the 2008 election, and how his interest in history started in college. He took a circuitous path when writing a report about the history of the American food system fostered a love for food history, and then a book about the unfinished America Eats! manuscript by the Works Progress Administration fostered an interest in learning about the New Deal.

STEPHANIE talks about the frustrations of being born black and political. She learned a dry, white-washed version of history that never rang true.

ALSO MENTIONED: The New York Time’s Dialect Quiz and Teaching Slavery (Season 1, Minisode 3).

During our summer break we launched a shiny new merch store, created a fancy Patreon account, and picked top listener reviews from our challenge last season! We took a lil hiatus to recharge and plan for a very scandalous new season of Beyond Reproach!

This episode we sip on a Vieux Carre, a very delightful Creole spin on a Manhattan. Tux explains the origins of this New Orleans’s classic and Stephanie describes how this famous drink ties to her scandal involving an infamous politician. This cocktail is spirited and decadent like us. Cheers!

Also covered: Alchemy, Roger Stone, the Mack, TCM, complicated loves, being #gooped, Dollywood, Lizzo tweets, and only children.

Stephanie explores the tyrannical reign of Louisiana’s Kingfish, Huey P. Long, the masterful populist who once boasted that he bought legislators “like sacks of potatoes, shuffled them like a deck of cards.” Long, to this day, remains one of the most flamboyant and controversial American politicians.
